What makes her beautiful...
She will never forget that day, the day she was attacked, her face cut open with a shard of broken glass.
It all plays back like a horrible dream that she will never forget for as long as she lives.
For weeks she couldn’t look at herself in the mirror, she just couldn’t bring herself to see the permanent changes. To see the constant reminder of what her face would never be again. What happened had changed her appearance and it had also changed her heart.
The surgeon told her there was no hope in fixing the scar and surgery would end up making it worse. The hope to have her old self-back the way it used to be was shattered in less than 5 minutes.
The reminder of that night stares back at her every time she looks in the mirror now.
She was so swollen and bruised; everyone stared at her, which made her feel even worse. She had to relearn how to do the tasks she took for granted, the simple things, like brushing her teeth, eating, talking and washing her face. She couldn’t’ smile, couldn’t talk, it was all too painful which defeated her. Everyday she cried and wanted to scream, life was so unfair. Eventually the gash healed but her heart took longer. She credits her strength in getting through all of this to her family, friends, pastor and talking with a councillor. She eventually learned to love her self and her scar. And now she can't see her self without it. “It became apart of me”, she says, “apart of what makes me beautiful”.
